Mental illness, whether it is anxiety, depression, psychotic or bipolar affective disorder, can be very painful. These are real illnesses causing real pain to people all over the world each and every day. Yet mental illness remains tremendously underdiagnosed and undertreated.
Major mental illnesses such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder rarely appear “out of the blue.” Most often family, friends, teachers or individuals themselves begin to recognise small changes or a feeling that “something is not quite right” about their thinking, feelings or behavior before one of these illnesses appears in its full-blown form.
Many people go months or years without proper diagnosis or treatment. So much of the pain and suffering from mental illness is unnecessary. As an experienced psychiatrists, we know that there are many very effective treatment options available today.
